redacted

Redacted is an ongoing collage series created from issues of 1980s Playboy magazine—a publication that helped shape a cultural script for femininity through the lens of the male gaze. By cutting, obscuring, rewriting, and reassembling its pages, I reclaim those narratives from within, transforming artifacts of objectification into spaces for reflection, contradiction, and agency.

Redaction is typically an act of concealment—a means of controlling what can be known. Here, it becomes the opposite. Each omission reveals what the original pages left unsaid: the complexity of women’s interior lives, the tension between identity and performance, and the stories that exist beyond fantasy. As language is interrupted and imagery rearranged, new meanings emerge from the fragments.

Rather than erasing history, Redacted interrogates it, asking who has been allowed to author the female experience—and what becomes possible when women become the editors of their own narratives.
